My Version:
Ingredients
- 1lb Ground Venison
- Salt and Pepper (to taste)
- ¼ cup Steak Sauce (I used Heinz with Lea & Perrins Worcestershire)
- 4 tbs Salted Butter (more to butter buns)
- 1 med. Onion (chopped)
- 1 med. Green Bell Pepper (seeded and chopped)
- 2 tbs Flour
- 1 cup Beef Broth (I used a Wyler's Beef Bullion Cube)
- Sliced Provolone Cheese
- Mini Sub-Buns
Heat large skillet over medium-high heat. Add ground venison while breaking up into chunks with a spatula or spoon, season meat with salt & pepper, cook until browned. Drain an excess liquid. Stir in steak sauce. Add butter, stir until melted. Add the green bell pepper and onion and cook for 3-4 minutes, until the onions start to become tender. Tilt the pan slightly moving meat mixture to the top with a spatula or spoon and allowing the liquid to come to the bottom. Whisk flour into liquid cooking 1 min or so until it starts to brown. Return pan flat. Slowly whisk beef broth into flour mixture while incorporating meat mixture. Sauce will thicken.
Split the sub buns and butter each of the cut sides. Heat a large skillet to medium heat. Place split sub buns cut side down into the skillet and cook until lightly browned on the bottom. Remove from the pan and place slice of provolone cheese on each side. Pile the meat mixture onto the top of the bottom half of each bun and place the top half of the bun on top.
(Serves 8)
The Dish on the Dish:
My thoughts... it was a nice change from the classic tomato based sloppy joe. If you like philly cheese steak you will love this dish cause I do! If you want to add a little kick you could try pepper jack instead of provolone.
Dan's thoughts.... he said it was okay but not great. Nothing like the real thing.
Nathan's thoughts.... he tried it even with the onion & pepper in it which is rare for him and HE LOVED IT!!
Austyn's thoughts... he ate a mini-sub with ham & mayo instead.
